THE JOB
The Network Maintenance Manager is accountable for the end-to-end performance, resilience, and compliance of the live fibre network. This role owns reactive and planned maintenance delivery, emergency response, contractor performance, commercial control, and stakeholder coordination to ensure service continuity, SLA compliance, and cost recovery.
This is a hands-on leadership role, not a desk job. You are expected to control incidents, make decisions under pressure, and hold suppliers to account.
WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
- Own the field delivery of reactive, planned, and preventative maintenance across the fibre network.
- Ensure 24/7 incident response capability, including out-of-hours escalation point of contact and major incident management.
- Site management of all MSOs during working hours & escalatory POC ability outside of working hours
- Management of all CSOs during working hours & escalatory POC ability outside of working hours
- Ability to mobilise to GB as required
- Minimise customer impact through effective fault triage, prioritisation, and restoration planning.
- Maintain network availability in line with contractual SLAs and regulatory obligations.
- Lead the response to third-party damage, environmental incidents, and infrastructure failures.
- Working alongside the Repair Service Unit (RSU) for incident coordination, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Ensure contractor populates damage reports, providing evidence capture and support commercial team in cost recovery.
- Working alongside the Repair Service Unit (RSU) for repeat-fault analysis and implement permanent corrective measures.
- Manage approved maintenance contractors against safety, quality, programme, and commercial KPIs.
- Ensure contractor compliance with RAMS, NRSWA, permits, wayleaves, and network standards.
- Drive performance improvement through audits, reviews, and corrective action plans.
- Support continuous improvement of maintenance suppliers.
- Aid in the delivery of planned and preventative maintenance programmes.
- Ensure accurate network records are maintained following maintenance activities.
- Act as the primary interface with:
- ISPs and internal service teams
- Openreach (PIA matters)
- Local authorities, utilities, and private developers
- Provide clear, timely communication during incidents and planned works.
- Deliver against operational budgets and maintenance cost controls.
- Track and report on KPIs including SLA compliance, MTTR, repeat faults, contractor performance, and costs.
- Ensure maintenance activities comply with H&S, regulatory, and company governance requirements.
- Support audits, investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to the evolution of the maintenance operating model as the network scales.
- Complete site audit for health & safety, quality and compliance.
WHAT WILL YOU BRING?
Essential:
- Proven experience managing live telecoms or utility networks.
- Strong understanding of fibre network architecture and maintenance principles.
- Demonstrable experience managing contractors and third-party suppliers.
- Experience handling network incidents, outages, and damage recovery.
- Strong stakeholder management and decision-making under pressure.
- Knowledge of Openreach PIA processes and governance.
- Willingness to work flexibly, including on-call escalation when required.
- Background in NRSWA, wayleaves, permits, and statutory coordination.
- Experience operating within strict SLAs and regulated environments.
- Experience with GIS platforms (ESRI, QGIS, etc.).
Desirable:
- Understanding of fibre splicing, testing, and optical performance.
